The Wallace House at" Rose 'n Arch, " designed by John White, 1905

This is a property that commands an emotional response. It sits on a double corner lot that you are invited to enter through a trellis into a lush, fragrant garden. This chalet-style home was designed by John White, brother-in-law of Bernard Maybeck, and architect of the current Hillside Club. It has been on previous BAHA house tours, but now it is available for sale by the owner. It features a spacious entry leading to a classic Arts & Crafts living room of redwood with a prominent clinker brick fireplace. Kitchen and baths have been updated, not in a grand way but befitting a very Berkeley home of this period. There are seven bedrooms and five baths on three floors. The top floor, called the atelier, is wonderful, quirky, unique. I'm sure there will be arguments over some of the renovation choices, but it is a pleasure to be in this home.

This unusual property was on the market for 77 days, listed for $2,995,000, and then withdrawn. If you might have interest in the property I am still in touch with the seller, and would be happy to arrange a showing.

The McGrew House, A three-story Maybeck in the Elmwood.

Not all owners have been kind to this house, but it still has remarkable presence. You are surrounded by original, unpainted heart redwood. It sits at the corner of Derby and Hillegass across from Willard Park in a very urban setting. But for the right person, this is a gem. Five bedrooms, three+ baths, multiple fireplaces on three levels.

After more than eight months, three price reductions, and two agents, it is now off the market. It was last listed for $1,349,000.

and a bit further north, near Garberville. . .

A Julia Morgan masterpiece, complete with furnishings, art and wine collection. Although Julia Morgan's demanding schedule in the 1920's often revolved around the building of her epic Hearst Castle, the famed architect worked to the same exacting standards in the creation of this country residence on Benbow Lake. Constucted in 1926, the property is nestled on approxiamtely 2+ acres of lushly forested land bordering by the Eel River and Virgin Redwood State Parks. Offered in a meticulously renovated condition the manor house, guest house, and carriage house all embrace the senses and provide an intimate feeling amidst a grand scale. Listed for $8.9M!
